A little chit-chat with Kavya, a tattoo artist whose explored various mediums of tattooing and illustrating dream scapes, from hand and poke to UV tattoos. She is also responsible for blessing us with the quirky 'See You Later, Alligator' temporary tattoo design.
How has your artistic style evolved since you first started making art/tattooing? Are there particular influences that shaped this transformation?
My artistic style has evolved significantly since I first started tattooing, and that is because when I began, I used to draw inspiration mostly from visual things that I saw around me, cute 2D images that I could build. Now I think I draw inspiration from, feelings and emotions more and, somehow, translate that into my style, which is more, evolved in terms of the colors I use, the techniques I use, the scale I work with, and yeah, just an evolved style, I believe.
What's your go-to remedy for overcoming creative blocks? Any bizarre rituals or techniques?
I deal with creative blocks in a rather funny way, I think. Whenever I'm stressed, or I'm not able to create something at a certain deadline, I usually shake it off, which means I have like a solo dance party with just me and some crazy lights and this disco ball that I have to just, to like help myself relax and take a breather, help my muscles loosen up and get my creative juices flowing.
If you could go back in time and give your beginner self one piece of advice, what would it be? Share a piece of advice you wish someone had given you when you first started your artistic journey.
If I could go back in time and give my beginner self one piece of advice, it would be to not be scared and intimidated by public exposure. I think I was always very scared to put my work and myself out there on a public platform to be judged and watched by other people. But I think everybody, even in the tattoo industry, has, had that at a starting point, and that starting point can be different for everybody. So I think it's worth the shot to put your work and yourself out there just to get validation and document your work to see how you have grown and how far you've come.
